Stud ends of Tube Fittings and Mating Ports – Quick Compatibility Guide.
Tube Fittings – as the name indicates, these are handled by most of the people who are in Hydraulics, right from Design Engineers, stores, assembly personnel and service engineers etc. However, these tube fittings are considered as hardware items in hydraulics and most of the time its little difficult to understand.
Tube fittings have one of the category in its family as “Stud fittings.” To give some examples of stud fittings – Male Stud fittings, Male Stud Elbow fittings, Swivel Stud standpipes and Banjo fittings.
These stud fittings are available with varieties of stud ends which are directly connected to the Inlet or Outlet of manifolds, pumps, and Control blocks and also in some of the hydraulic valves. These products (Manifolds, control blocks, and hydraulic valves) have outlet ports. Port: Connections where the screw thread provides both the mechanical joint and the hydraulic seal.
There are different types of ports machined on the manifold block and / or hydraulic valves which are broadly classified as BSP, Metric, SAE, BSP Taper and NPT. Stud ends of the tube fitting directly can be fitted into these ports during hydraulic plumbing. One has to be carefully select the right stud fitting to make a leak free joint since, every stud fitting CANNOT BE SIMPLY ASSEMBLED INTO ANY OF THE PORTS!!! Without proper selection of stud end.
Compatibility of stud end with the ports is very important during design stage of any hydraulic system.

Initially let’s understand different varieties of stud ends available.
Let’s learn further about the compatibility of the stud fittings with ports.The table shows TWO types of Metric stud ends (M) – One is with Elastomeric seal and other one with O-Ring. Here comes the real challenge to select which stud end fitting to choose.
It’s all depend on the type of ports machined or available on the manifold blocks or valves.
Below table shows recommended stud ends with reference to the port types.
- DO NOT USE Stud ends having Elastomeric seal in Truncated port.
Both conditions lead to Seal DAMAGE and LEAKAGE!!
Regarding Taper threaded ports like BSPT (R) and NPT does not need any additional seal and hence not covered in the above table.
